The price for this single plant was the highest price per bulb ever recorded during the
Dutch Tulip Mania of the 1630s. The Semper Augustus, sold for ~$19,500 in 2005 USD, in Haarlem, circa 1636.

(The Tulip sold for a record 6,000 florins. A tonne of butter at that time cost about 100 florins. In 2005, a tonne of butter cost about $324.)
